How Ride Hailing May Evolve Due to Covid-19

It may come as no surprise that the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic are being felt across just about every industry imaginable, from air travel to manufacturing. Ride hailing is no different, and with people sheltering in place and working remotely, companies like Uber and Lyft are facing tough times.

Lyft, however, is taking the pandemic as an opportunity to expand their offerings. On March 26th the company confirmed that it initiated a pilot project which would let its drivers deliver medical supplies and meals. Such services are nothing new for the ride hailing industry, as Uber has long since been leading the charge with its UberEats service. Where Lyft differs, however, is that it has now partnered with Amazon in order to deliver packages and groceries for the e-commerce giant.

The announcement went out to drivers via email, with Lyft adding that it'll be sending out weekly notifications with "new information about driving, earning opportunities, and supporting your community."

It’s welcome news for Lyft drivers who have seen their wages plummet along with demand for rides. The precarious nature of work in the gig economy has made it difficult for many Lyft workers to seek financial assistance during the crisis, so both drivers and Lyft hope the pilot project will help ease the burden, all while providing a valuable and much needed service to the community during these difficult times.

What Will Covid-19 do to the Battery Life of Your Devices?

Stuck at home with nothing to do? You’re not alone. And while social distancing rules being enforced across the globe do allow for some walks and short ventures into the outside world, depending on your location, many of us are opting to spend much of our time in front of our various devices. With the increased use, however, we can’t help but wonder, what will happen to battery life?

One can only imagine that as our various devices get used more frequently and are charged more often, their lifespan will drastically decrease, and we’ll all be shopping for new devices as soon as the crisis is over. In the grander scheme of things, however, there’s the bigger question of what this will mean for battery life in general. Given the increased use of their devices, will consumers start demanding a longer battery lifespan for their devices? Will manufacturers be inspired to innovate the battery in ways we never even dreamed possible? Will wireless charging finally be a reality for all devices across all platforms? We’ll just have to wait and see, which is very much the case for a lot of aspects of everyday life affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. Netflix Cutting Video Quality in an Effort to Ease Bandwidth Usage

With much of the world either in self quarantine or practicing social distancing, telecom companies around the globe are seeing a huge spike in bandwidth, and they’re struggling to keep up. Much of that bandwidth is due to Netflix streaming, which is understandable, given the fact that many people find themselves with nothing much to do other than stream their favorite shows.

To ease the burden on ISPs, Netflix has been taking steps to cut the quality of their streaming, a move designed to decrease traffic by about 25%. The move was announced in Canada shortly after it was announced in Europe, and it’s likely on its way to the US as well.

"We believe that this will provide significant relief to congested networks and will be deploying it in Canada for the next 30 days," said Ken Florance, vice president of content delivery in a statement on March 26th.

Netflix isn’t the only streaming service to reduce its video quality. CraveTV, the Bell Media streaming service that offers popular HBO and Showtime programs to Canadian subscribers has followed suit.

"Crave does plan to temporarily reduce the quality of streams on certain devices," the company said in a statement, also on March 26th.

While the measures are designed to be temporary, there’s no telling how long they’ll actually remain in effect as the Covid-19 pandemic worsens across the globe. We expect other streamers to follow suit in short order, but don’t worry, all of your favorite shows should still be available for streaming and many may not even notice the reduced quality!

Faster 3D Printing May Soon be a Reality

3D printers have been nothing short of revolutionary for the world of rapid prototyping and production of highly specialized parts. With the cost having come down considerably within the last few years, 3D printing has also become the domain of hobbyists and enthusiasts of late. But if there’s one complaint that both consumers and industry would have about the technology, it would be its speed. In fact, while the technique renders 3D objects, 3D printers are really more like 2D printers, with the printer heads slowly building up layers of material while working on horizontal layers. The process can take hours, sometimes even days for particularly large and complex projects, but all this could be about to change thanks to a new technique demonstrated by researchers from Switzerland's Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL).

The new technique, while similar to existing technology in many respects, incorporates the application of tomographic techniques, the same used in x-rays and ultrasounds, that allows for rotational printing. The EPFL writes, "The system is currently capable of making two-centimeter structures with a precision of 80 micrometers, about the same as the diameter of a strand of hair. But as the team develops new devices, they should be able to build much bigger objects, potentially up to 15 centimeters." It’s exciting news for the world of 3D printing, and only a matter of time before the technology is refined, improved upon, and becomes available to the consumer market.

Apple Maps is Still Trying to Stick it to Google Maps

Apple and Google have been in direct competition with each other for a number of years now, and when Apple came out with their own mapping app, the gauntlets were dropped. But what hope did Apple have against Google, the industry leader, and how long could they keep up their fight before caving in and going back to using Google Maps? Well, quite some time it turns out, and they’re not about to slow down either.

Launched alongside iOS 13 in September 2019 was Look Around, a new feature within Apple Maps that emulates Google’s ever so popular Street View. Of course, at the time of its launch Look Around was limited to San Francisco, but Apple users are starting to notice rollouts for other major US cities, including Boston, New York, and Philadelphia. Alongside street-level photography, when Look Around is displayed in full screen Apple displays Yelp listings and other data on real-world buildings and monuments in the area. Some have also noted that street level photography in Look Around is superior to that in its rival Google Maps.

Second Screen Syndrome

There’s no denying that smartphones have become a fixture of our daily lives, at least in the developed world, to the point where many of us are faced with the grim reality of being addicted to our devices. And as if that weren’t enough, there’s another phenomenon popping up, “second screen syndrome.”

Mary Meeker, a venture capitalist with Bond Capital, presented some rather interesting findings in a 2019 “Internet Trends” report. According to data from Nielsen, the TV metrics company, 88 percent of Americans "use a second digital device while watching TV." That’s right, 88 percent of the people watching television have their attention divided, with much of it likely focused on the smaller screen just before their eyes. Exploring the data just a bit further, Nielsen reports that seventy-one percent of Americans "look up content related to content they are watching," while 41 percent of Americans are busy messaging "friends/family about content they are watching."

Is this a troubling trend? Perhaps for some. Humans, after all, have a proven track record of not being very good at multitasking. But in an age where our attention is continuously divided, this trend may not come as much of a surprise, especially since most of us are already doing it if the numbers are to be believed. Just one more way in which tech is changing the everyday reality of our lives.

The End of Owning Music?

As technology evolved, the music industry has had to evolve with it. First came vinyl, then tapes, but where the quality and convenience of tapes left something to be desired, CDs swooped in to fill those voids. Ever since, most record stores slowly stopped carrying any format other than compact discs, and at a time they were thought to be the be all end all of at-home music enjoyment. And then, the dawn of the digital era.

MP3s were a big game changer, and while at first most downloaded music was done so illegally, music producers started to clue in on the potential profits of digital downloads and started offering consumers and alternative to physical formats. Those record stores that once had to clear out their vinyl displays in favor or smaller CD displays are now doing the opposite, as CD sales are now few and far between, with many audiophiles moving back towards the superior sound of vinyl. But will it be enough for those record stores to survive?

Whereas once the music industry was all too happy to offer digital downloads as an alternative to physical formats, disruptors like Spotify emerged, offering an alternative to outright purchasing music. Many, if not most consumers of music now opt to pay a monthly fee in exchange for the rights to stream as much music as they choose, as opposed to purchasing an album or a song at a time. It’s an already dominant trend that’s only growing, begging the question: Is this the end of owning music? Time will tell.
